Mountain Navigation
Order Now Our 2 day intensive course on navigational skills takes you into the Scottish mountains in summer/winter conditions.
We will be focusing on micro-navigation, which involves navigating short routes through complex and challenging terrain. Essential navigation skills and strategies will be developed and enhanced during these exercises. These include the application of Naismith’s rule on pacing and timing, aspect of slope, boxing, doglegs and the altimeter. These methods will allow you to navigate in heavy mountain fog and mist which is part of the Scottish mountain environment (even in summer!).
We will also be looking at the role of the GPS in mountain environments – as a backup navigational aid and how it can fit in with traditional map and compass navigation.
The course will also cover the implications of environmental hazards (e.g. rock falls and flooding) for route selection. In addition, refresher training on the physical and navigational demands posed by Scottish mountain terrain in poor weather conditions will be provided.
Accommodations, meals & loan of equipment are included in the course cost.
